Alexis Ralaivao

Alexis Ralaivao (b. 1991, Rennes, France) is a self-taught painter celebrated for his intimate and modern reinterpretations of figurative art. Drawing inspiration from classical painters such as Rembrandt, Ingres and Honthorst, as well as contemporary artists like Kehinde Wiley and Barkley Hendricks, Ralaivao masterfully blends traditions with contemporary themes. His works often feature ultra-close-up, immaculately detailed depictions of Black and mixed-race subjects, drawn from his social circle, emphasizing intimacy and tenderness.

Ralaivao’s paintings focus on fleeting, personal moments, such as snapshots of his partner during COVID-19 quarantines or scenes inspired by ephemeral social media images, transforming these into enduring works of art. His use of soft pastel tones, thin brushstrokes and finely rendered details like moles and jewelry creates a dream-like atmosphere, erasing the distance typically found in classical portraiture.

Through sensual compositions and elements of glamour - such as pearl necklaces and luxury accessories - Ralaivao challenges and reimagines traditional gendered and religious tropes. His works aim to “shock” audiences with their emotional depth, celebrating youth, diversity and the beauty of everyday moments. Now based in Berlin, Ralaivao’s paintings have gained international recognition, with exhibitions in Rome, New York, Paris, Miami and inclusion in prestigious collections like the Institute of Contemporary Art, Miami.
