Lucy Bull (b. 1990, New York) is a Los Angeles-based artist renowned for her vibrant, abstract paintings that engage the senses and invite deeply personal interpretations. Her works, described as synesthetic fields of color and texture, merge gestural abstraction with surrealist undertones, balancing spontaneity and meticulous craftsmanship. Bull's dynamic compositions shift between optical overload and subtle order, revealing traces of deliberate planning beneath layers of intuitive brushwork.
Her process is immersive and experimental, involving rhythmic and layered applications of pigment to create atmospheric, sensory-rich paintings. Viewers are drawn into her works' multidimensional spaces, where amorphous shapes and textured surfaces evoke fluctuating worlds that form and dissolve. Bull’s paintings are both visceral and meditative, offering a continual dialogue between chaos and control.
Bull has exhibited widely, with solo shows at venues like the Institute of Contemporary Art, Miami (2024–2025) and the Long Museum West Bund, Shanghai (2023). Her work has also been included in prominent group exhibitions such as the NGV Triennial in Melbourne (2023) and at the Baltimore Museum of Art (2024). Her art is held in major collections, including the Hirshhorn Museum, Los Angeles County Museum of Art and Pérez Art Museum Miami.
Drawing inspiration from color field painting and surrealist landscapes, Bull’s practice emphasizes intuition and sensory exploration. In addition to her painting career, she has curated exhibitions and authored an artist book, Plume (2017). A graduate of the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Bull continues to captivate audiences with her innovative, ever-evolving approach to abstraction.
